In Alaska, nearly all commercial, residential, and public works construction activities are regulated at the state level. While contractors are not required to complete a prequalification process for public works projects, they must hold a valid Alaska contractor registration before submitting a bid.

Mechanical Inspection is responsible for overseeing a wide range of mechanical installations to help ensure public safety. Its responsibilities include the inspection and regulation of electrical and plumbing systems, boilers and pressure vessels, elevators, amusement rides, ski lifts, and tramways. The division also investigates complaints related to contractor licensing and the Mechanical and Electrical Administrator programs throughout the state.

Requirements?

Contractors must hold a valid Alaska business license in addition to their contractor registration, as the two credentials are issued separately.

General contractors who supervise new home construction or perform residential work exceeding 25% of a structure's value must obtain a Residential Contractor License or Residential Contractor Endorsement.

To qualify for a residential endorsement, applicants must complete a 16-hour cold climate construction course and pass the Residential Contractor Endorsement Examination with a minimum score of 70%. Electrical and mechanical administrators are also required to pass a licensing examination. General contractor licenses expire on December 31 of even-numbered years, while specialty contractor and mechanical licenses expire on December 31 of odd-numbered years.

Contractors are also required to provide proof of insurance in the minimum amounts of:

Reciprocal Agreements

Alaska does not maintain formal contractor licensing reciprocity agreements with other states. However, the state may accept or recognize examinations administered by testing organizations such as Prometric or other approved testing providers on a case-by-case basis.
